Castlebar Chamber President calls for tax on off licence sales to help boost bar trade

Castlebar Chamber of Commerce President Oliver Kelleher has called for a further tax on off licence alcohol sales to help benefit the bar, restaurant and hotel trade. According to Mr Kelleher for every €10,000 spent in an off licence, one job is created but for the same spend in a bar and restaurant four jobs are created.

Tidy Towns competition

SuperValu retailers in Mayo are calling on the county to get behind this year’s SuperValu TidyTowns competition. Last year there were 37 entries from Mayo with Westport winning the overall county award, in addition Bridie Moran of Westport TidyTowns was recognised as a SuperValu TidyT owns Hero for 2012.

Mayo business community calls for free parking in towns to save jobs

Local business people are calling on the local authorities to save town centres in Mayo from desertion by allowing for leniency when it comes to car parking. Recommendations for such changes to restrictive parking regimes were outlined this week in the Retail Grocery Dairy and Allied Trades Association (RGDATA) report entitled A Nightmare on Every Street. The RGDATA is seeking new guidelines to end the parking policy inconsistencies of local authorities and help combat the pull of shoppers to out of town retail centres with free parking.

Tourist office to receive funding

The Castlebar Tourist Office, which is operated by Castlebar Chamber of Commerce volunteers and various employment schemes in the town, will receive €5,000 funding this year from the Town Council. Cllr Ger Deere told the budget meeting of Castlebar Town Council, “This is an invaluable service that has worked very well over the last year and we should continue to support it. I just popped in there before this meeting and they had 16 people call in already today and it’s a cold wet Tuesday in January.”
